One of the country’s highest-rated ice cream shops is finally opening a location in Washington, D.C.
Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams have long been available at Whole Foods Markets around the District, but the 1925 14th Street NW location will be the Ohio chain’s first scoop shop in the nation’s capital. Although the location is currently open for business, Jeni’s will celebrate the launch with an official grand opening ceremony on October 5 featuring free scoops of ice cream from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.
Jeni’s scoop shops are more than the flavors you can find on the company’s website. In addition to scooping straight up flavors, Jeni’s 14th Street creates sundaes like the photogenic Strawberry Betty (photographed below by thediningdolls).
The artisanal ice cream maker has expanded significantly over the last few years. The chain now has locations in Nashville, Chicago, Atlanta, and Los Angeles.
In Chicago, Jeni’s often ends up on “best flavor” lists due to a long-time relationship with Chicago’s Intelligentsia Coffee. The roaster provides coffee used for the popular Intelligentsia Black Cat Espresso.
Jeni’s has also landed on numerous lists in the highly competitive and cutthroat Los Angeles ice cream market. Notably, and perhaps not surprisingly, Jeni’s Churro ice cream is a big hit in the city.
