Everyone’s favorite Game of Thrones popup bar (previously everyone’s favorite Cherry Blossom/Super Mario Bros. popup bar (previously everyone’s favorite Christmas-themed popup bar)) is about to become a lot more terrifying.
Drink Company, the folks behind the parenthetically mentioned popups above, are finishing work on the next big conversion: PUB Dread.
As the name would suggest, they’re going full-on Halloween with a proper haunting tapping into the deepest fears of the staff. Seriously, they actually asked the staff what scared them the most and are turning those fears into the theme.
Running from October 1st through 31st, the bar—encompassing the former homes of Mockingbird Hill, Southern Efficiency, and Eat the Rich—will have different themes in different rooms. Drink Company’s special projects team Matt Fox and Adriana Salame Aspiazu surveyed the staff about their deepest fears and incorporated them into the design.
Washingtonian runs down some of what can be expected once the bar opens on October 1:
- Haunted Forest
- A crypt complete with tombstones
- Grandma’s parlor featuring a creepy doll collection
- Spacebar – we don’t know but we do know in space no one can hear you scream
- And robots
While the bar theme is terrific (terror-ific?) here at UpOut we’re suckers for theme menus and this menu doesn’t let us down. Each cocktail is themed from a movie quote, so we did our best to figure out which drink goes with what movie. Here are the cocktails and our best guesses:
DAVID S. PUMPKINS
Aged Rum, Two James Dr. Bird Jamaican Rum, Martell VS Cognac, Sherry Blend, Allspice Dram, Coconut, Pumpkin, Any Questions?
Honestly, we were all stumped on this one, but thankfully the Washingtonian linked to an SNL sketch featuring Tom Hanks as a character named David Pumpkin.
“ITS PRONOUNCED FRONKENSTEEN”
Belle Meade Bourbon, Salted Cucumber, Semi Dry Cider, Apple Cider
Easy, “Young Frankenstein.”
BEETLEJUICE, BEETLEJUICE, BEETLEJUICE!
Aperol, Campari, Spanish Vermouth, Twizzler Soda
Also, easy, and wait, Twizzler soda is a thing?
“WANNA PLAY A GAME”
Dark Rum, St. George Terroir, Giffard Vanilla, Root Beer Concentrate, lemon, Clarified Milk
Saw, Saw 2, Saw 3, Saw 4, Saw 5, Saw 6, Saw 7, etc. If that’s too scary you can pretend the drink is a reference to “War Games.”
“WHAT ARE YOU AFRAID OF?”
Catoctin Creek Rye, Madeira, Manzanilla, Salted Maple, Lemon, Allspice Dram
Our best guess is the greatest board game based comedy film of all time, “Clue.”
Professor Plum: “What are you afraid of, a fate worse than death?”
Mrs. Peacock: “No, just death, isn’t that enough?”
“I SEE DEAD PEOPLE”
Gin, Fino, Fig, Cinnamon, Lemon, Bitters, Soda
Oh, M. Night, remember when everyone thought you were going to be the next big thing? “The Sixth Sense.”
“THE DEAD WILL WALK THE EARTH.”
Tequila + Charred Pineapple Tonic
George S. Romero’s (RIP) “Dawn of the Dead.” When there’s no more room in hell…
Alexandro Sherry Blend, Brandy De Jerez, Luxardo Maraschino,Cinnamon Grapefruit, Fig, Lime
You probably want to say “any zombie movie” but you’d be wrong. This honor goes to Dan O’Bannon’s “The Return of the Living Dead” which featured the first instance of a zombie asking for brains.
“WE ALL FLOAT DOWN HERE”
Peaty Scotch, Rye, Sweet Vermouth, Cream Sherry, Creme de Cacao, Bitters
If you didn’t guess “It” we’re super impressed by your ability to avoid exposure to pop culture.
“DO YOU LIKE SCARY MOVIES?”
Vodka, Aperol, Cointreau, Americano Vermouth, Orange, Bitters, Blood Orange Soda
“Scream” Well, Sidney? Do you?
