You may have heard that there might be a counter-protest or two against the alt-right Patriots Prayer “Freedom Rally” happening at Crissy Field this weekend. You may have also read essays advocating both for and against taking those counter-protests directly to the Rally attendees. No matter which direction you choose there’s no shortage of ways to express unity and resistance. After all, this is San Francisco. It’s what we do. The two main events are the March Against Hate at Crissy Field and the Peace, Love, and Laughter Gathering at Civic Center Plaza. Here’s a list of what’s happening around the city.
The city is so concerned about this weekend they’ve mobilized the ENTIRE police force. No matter what you choose to do, be careful and look out for your neighbors and allies. Remember: love begets love. Stay positive in the face of animosity. Rise above. Here’s a list of what’s happening around the city.
Crissy Field Counter-Protests
The main march to Crissy Field is being organized by the ILWU. The “March Against Hate” will begin gathering at 10 a.m. at Marina Green (between Scott Street and Filmore Street).
An additional contingent will start at 12:30 p.m. at the Ralston Memorial Statue (see this map). Attendees to this march are encouraged to bring cut flowers so they can be handed out to the attendees of the Patriot Prayer “Freedom Rally.”
If handing out flowers isn’t your bag there are a number of other ways to peacefully protest. For example, anti-fascist clowns will make an appearance or you can step on your paddle board and protest from the water. Another group is encouraging people to park near Crissy Field the night before, so the alt-right have farther to walk.
Away From Crissy Field Counter-Protests
The main event is at Civic Center Plaza, but there are numerous rallies happening around the city that will culminate at the plaza.
