Gay Shame strikes again! The queer activist militia took another swipe at the yuppie infestation of San Francisco. The most recent onslaught came in the form of bizarre flyers along the Divisadero corridor, attacking techies with vulgar threats.

One message even warns that tech employees are at risk of being mugged. Their pre-millennial aesthetic is intentionally crude, featuring gaudy graphics, cheesy text, strange collages, and harsh language. In September, Gay Shame launched the anti-tech campaign with a blistering series of flyers throughout the Mission that concluded, “You are hereby advised to leave the Mission. Your next warning will not be so polite.”

Gay Shame describes itself as “a Virus in the System…committed to a queer extravaganza that brings direct action to astounding levels of theatricality.” They seek to renew the “intrinsic links between queer struggle and challenging power…(by countering) gay consumerism and the increasingly hypocritical left.”

Some find it ironic that a queer activist group is launching an attack campaign, especially considering their own struggles with discrimination. It’s also amusing that their Facebook page is looking for a web designer to build a new site. What’s even more surprising is that techies are actually feeling threatened by the satirical propaganda, reportedly wearing nondescript clothing and carrying bags without company logos to avoid detection. Although the movement utilizes questionable tactics, it also reflects San Francisco’s collective frustration with tenant displacement, cultural whitewashing, and unabated gentrification.

Gay Shame’s next meeting will be Nov 28th at 5:30 pm at Modern Times Bookstore in the Mission. All are welcome (except cops and techies).
