When it comes to genre film festivals in the United States there are few as legendary as Austin’s Fantastic Fest. The eight-day film festival is notorious for its often irreverent programming of sci-fi, horror, and action films from around the world. Attending the festival is a dream of many genre film fans.

Now, thanks to Alamo Drafthouse, San Franciscan cinephiles can stay right here by the Bay and enjoy a tiny slice of Fantastic Fest. Over four days, the Mission-based movie house will act as a satellite hub and screen 10 films from the Fantastic Fest 2017 slate. Standout screenings in San Francisco include the 4k restoration of the Dario Argento’s horror classic Suspiria, the Jeffrey Dahmer biopic My Friend Dahmer, Cambodian prison breakout film Jailbreak, and the mysterious, nearly silent, German horror film Hagazussa – A Heathen’s Curse.

Hopefully, this mini-Fantastic Fest does well enough so it returns with expanded programming next year. Seriously, San Francisco deserves Fantastic Debates where cinema controversies are settled “first with words, and then with furious FISTS!!”
